Decentralized Mapping

Definition

Decentralized mapping refers to creating geographic maps using a distributed network of contributors and data storage. This approach leverages blockchain technology or similar distributed ledger systems to record and verify spatial data, often incentivizing participants for their contributions. Unlike centralized mapping services, decentralized platforms aim to provide censorship resistance, data ownership to contributors, and enhanced transparency regarding data provenance. This methodology mitigates reliance on single entities for map data collection, maintenance, and dissemination.
