Network Accountability

Definition

Network accountability refers to the mechanisms that ensure participants in a network adhere to its rules and face consequences for misconduct. In decentralized blockchain networks, this involves cryptographic proofs, economic incentives, and disincentives (like slashing in proof-of-stake) that verify validator behavior and penalize malicious or negligent actions. It establishes a framework where network participants are responsible for their contributions to consensus and data integrity. Effective network accountability is crucial for maintaining trust and security in permissionless environments.
