Network Partitioning

Definition

Network partitioning refers to a condition in a distributed system where communication ceases between different segments of the network. This event causes the network to split into multiple isolated sub-networks, each operating independently without awareness of the others. During a partition, nodes in different segments cannot exchange data, potentially leading to inconsistent states across the overall system. It represents a significant challenge for maintaining data consistency and availability in decentralized environments.
