Rollup Finality

Definition

Rollup Finality denotes the moment at which transactions handled on a rollup layer are deemed irreversible and permanently recorded on the foundational main blockchain. For optimistic rollups, this entails a dispute window during which transactions can be contested before being concluded on the primary network. For zero-knowledge rollups, finality is attained almost immediately once a legitimate cryptographic verification of the rollup’s state change is presented and confirmed on the main chain. This concept is essential for comprehending the security assurances and delay of transactions within secondary layer scaling methods.
